Configuration in the design phase makes it possible to generate 3D models, (production) drawings and other documents for any possible product variant in Solidworks with just a click. Design automation thus expands product configuration to enable direct 3D visualization on the basis of a configured Solidworks model. Particularly when visualizing standard variants, this eliminates a large portion of the manual design effort, as the module variance is now created using the configurator.
Now, variants of a product family take only a fraction of the normal design time to generate and have a standardized design structure. Thanks to the direct integration of the configurator in Solidworks, manual changes for special designs can be made at any time. Links to downstream systems (ERP/PDM) create a homogeneous process structure while supporting and relieving designers in their day-to-day work.
For businesses, implementing design configuration (design automation) results in a pooling of know-how and technical product knowledge. By this means, you can enable and secure the accessibility of this knowledge and ensure that it is carried forward loss-free for your company’s future. Thus, mirroring products in the configurator also serves to back up this know-how.
It was very important for us to obtain a system that we could maintain ourselves, including definition and maintenance of the rule set .
Patrick Torrisi, CAD systems manager and project owner at ILLIG Maschinenbau
